Giving

May 3, 2020

Word of the day: 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two tiny copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:2-4 NIV

I’m sure you can read today’s verse without me reading it to you. I want to do a small commentary, if any, don’t mind. Jesus sees what we do when we give. The poor widow gave all she had. Jesus acknowledges that made sure people understood the differences in giving. We give as sacrificing, not when we can provide. She is living in poverty, most give on wealth and don’t give like people living in poverty. When we give, there are four principles of giving.

  1. Willingness to give, not what you offer.
  2. Make sure to strive to fulfill financial commitments.
  3. Giving to others in need, they will return the favor when you are in need.
  4. Give as a response to Christ. Not for something you can gain out of the situation.

The study bible gives principles to follow based on differences when we give. We are responsible for helping others in the eyes of God.

  1. We should follow our promises to give.
  2. Give as much as you can.
  3. Make up your mind on how much you give and stick to it.
  4. Give a proportion to what God has given to each of what God gave you.

The moral is we give to capacity but not to the point where we can’t live our four walls (food, shelter, utilities, transportation) or someone depending on your income. The teaching part of this is not to break yourself. It’s not moral to do that. When you think about giving, think about your devotion to God.

Father, thank you for today. I think about COVID-19 and how everyone is so giving during this difficult time. Nobody is judgmental; we are not doing this alone. This type of giving is a reflection of your devotion. Thank you for our fellowship. We love you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
