Doubts Turned to Miracles

Tuesday, July 13, 2021

46-48 Now, he was back in Cana of Galilee, the place where he made the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum, there was a particular official from the king’s court whose son was sick. When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and asked that he come down and heal his son, who was on the brink of death. Jesus put him off: “Unless you people are dazzled by a miracle, you refuse to believe.”

49 But the court official wouldn’t be put off. “Come down! It’s life or death for my son.”

50-51 Jesus simply replied, “Go home. Your son lives.”

The man believed the bare word Jesus spoke and headed home. On his way back, his servants intercepted him and announced, “Your son lives!”

52-53 He asked them what time he began to get better. They said, “The fever broke yesterday afternoon at one o’clock.” The father knew that that was the very moment Jesus had said, “Your son lives.”

53-54 That settled it. Not only the official believed, but his entire household believed. This was now the second sign Jesus gave after having come from Judea into Galilee. John 4:46-54 The Message

After Jesus preaches, he made his way to Cana in Galilee. A refresher course; this is where Jesus did a miracle and turns water into wine at a wedding. He meets with a government official. The government official learns that Jesus arrived and wanted to see him. The royal official had to walk 20 miles to meet with Jesus. He also called Jesus “Sir.” Although he had legal authority over Jesus, he humbled himself and did not let the title get in the way of greeting Jesus. Jesus is about to perform another miracle. Spoiler alert; he is about to do more blessings in the upcoming study of Jesus. Focusing on this one, the miracle’s purpose is to get people who didn’t believe in Jesus to start focusing on him. All over John’s book, John wrote to everybody that they should have faith in Christ, and he urgently told people that. The government official believed in Christ and had faith.

His faith is he left it up to Jesus to make it happen. It also demonstrated to others that he had faith and set an example of how we should respond when we want miracles to happen. Rachel Maddow said it perfectly: Watch what they do, not what they say. It’s one thing for people to say, I believe in Jesus, but it is another thing when it is time for them to show it. When you need Jesus, pray and be in faith as it will happen. Do not get caught up in people having to watch what you do, not what you say.

When the government official left his son to Jesus, this is a 20-mile difference. Yet, no matter the distance, Jesus can perform miracles. There are never space issues when it comes to Jesus performing anything you need to be done. He is not a WiFi connection or an internet corded connection where you have to be within limits, you can be anywhere, and your miracles will be achieved no matter where you are. When you look at the official’s attitude, notice the things that made his faith grow. First, he automatically went to Jesus. He knew no one else can do it but Jesus. Secondly, he believed Jesus when he told him to go, and he left. And lastly, his whole house felt and depended on Jesus. Faith grows, and it only grows when we use it.

Father, thanks for your miracles. No matter where we are in the world, no matter our faith, you are always here. Thank you for allowing us to know you better to grow in our faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
