Persecution in a Believer

Friday, August 6, 2021

26 They said, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27 “I’ve told you over and over and you haven’t listened. Why do you want to hear it again? Are you so eager to become his disciples?”

28-29 With that, they jumped all over him. “You might be a disciple of that man, but we’re disciples of Moses. We know for sure that God spoke to Moses, but we have no idea where this man even comes from.”

30-33 The man replied, “This is amazing! You claim to know nothing about him, but the fact is, he opened my eyes! It’s well known that God isn’t at the beck and call of sinners, but listens carefully to anyone who lives in reverence and does his will. That someone opened the eyes of a man born blind has never been heard of—ever. If this man didn’t come from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.”

34 They said, “You’re nothing but dirt! How dare you take that tone with us!” Then they threw him out in the street.

-John 9:26-34 The Message

The religious leaders continue to question the man that can see again.

Verse 26: The religious leaders asked, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

Verse 27: The man answered, “I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?”

Verse 28: They reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

Verse 29: We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from.”

Verse 30: The man responded, “Well, here is a fantastic thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.”

Verse 31: We know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.

Verse 32: “Since the beginning of time, it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.

Verse 33: If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

Verse 34: The leaders answered, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they put him out.

Verse 28 & 34 study: The man’s life has changed. He can see. It is a truly fantastic experience. But there will be people that will question your faith. The religious leaders did it with the formerly blind man. When the man didn’t deny Jesus, persecution will happen. You will lose people in your life, or maybe your life. But, just like no one can take your degrees away, take away your self-education, no one can take eternal life from you.

Father, thank you for this brief study today. I pray we can continue to spend time meditating to help refresh our minds and renew the soul. Thank you for your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
