Fruit and Multiply

9-10 “I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve doneā€”kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love.

11-15 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.

16 “You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. Therefore, as fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father concerning me, he gives you.

17 “But remember the root command: Love one another.

-John 15:9-17 The Message.

Verse 9: Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.

Verse 10: If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

Verse 11: These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made whole.

Verse 11 study: When things go good, we are happy, content with how things are going. But when hardship hits, things are different. What we should learn from this verse is that joy comes from a consistent relationship with Christ. When we walk with him, he will help us and not let us get down in sorrow because of hardship.

Verse 12: This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

Verse 13: greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

Verses 12-13 studies: I always say to people that listening is the heart of everything. That simply means that loving someone can come from listening because you show genuine care for that person. We love as Jesus loves others. We do have other ways of loving, such as helping, encouraging, and giving. Take time to see who needs this kind of care. Then, show love in any way possible.

Verse 14: You are My friends if you do what I command you.

Verse 15: No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

Verse 15 study: Think about this for a minute. Jesus is our Lord and Master, and most masters are called under them slaves. But Jesus calls us friends. How comforting is that? How encouraging is it for Jesus to see us as friends? We should give him our obedience and attention because we love him.

Verse 16: You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give you.

Verse 16 study: Jesus chose the first choice to love us and then die for us. Now, we make the second choice. Accept or reject him. We wouldn’t have options if it wasn’t for Jesus’ first choice.

Verse 17: This I command you, that you love one another.

Verse 17 study: As believers, we will get plenty of hatred around the world. We should still love each other and support one another. What problems do you let get in the way of loving other believers? For me, those who don’t share Jesus’ love for us, that’s my biggest problem getting in the way of loving other believers. I see believers wanting to change people and don’t do it properly. They tend to make Jesus look like a bad person when he got love for all of us. The solution is to switch the thought process. My answer and a complex answer is to still love those believers I disagree with. The bottom line is Jesus tells us to love them, and he will give us strength. I pray for strength to love others, Jesus. It is hard to love those that I disagree with because I see them doing something different other than showing love. They are quick to show people how Jesus can punish people for sins when we need to show love and attention to his grace when we do constantly mess up. Help me love them and follow you regardless of my feelings. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Father, thank you for choices, love, and the fruit of our labor. Thank you for giving me the wisdom to head in the right direction. Somebody needed to hear this today (me), and I pray it will be helpful as our world needs it. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
