Hated by the World

18-19 “If you find the godless world is hating you, remember it got its start hating me. If you lived on the world’s terms, the world would love you as one of its own. But since I picked you to live on God’s terms and no longer on the world’s terms, the world is going to hate you.

20 “When that happens, remember this: Servants don’t get better treatment than their masters. If they beat on me, they will certainly beat on you. If they did what I told them, they would do what you tell them.

21-25 “They are going to do all these things to you because of the way they treated me because they don’t know the One who sent me. If I hadn’t come and told them all this in plain language, it wouldn’t be so bad. As it is, they have no excuse. Hate me, hate my Father—it’s all the same. If I hadn’t done what I have done among them, works no one has ever done, they wouldn’t be to blame. But they saw the God-signs and hated anyway, both my Father and me. Interesting—they have verified the truth of their own Scriptures where it is written, ‘They hated me for no good reason.’

26-27 “When the Friend I plan to send you from the Father comes—the Spirit of Truth issuing from the Father—he will confirm everything about me. You, too, from your side must give your confirming evidence, since you are in this with me from the start.”

-John 15:18-27 The Message

Verse 18: “If the world hates you, you know that it had hated Me before it hated you.

Verse 19: If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.

Verse 20: Remember the word I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they would also persecute you; if they kept My word, they would keep yours also.

Verse 21: But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake because they do not know the One who sent Me.

Verse 22: If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sinned, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

Verse 23: He who hates Me hates My Father also.

Verse 24: If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated My Father and Me as well.

Verse 25: But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.’

Verse 26: When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

Verse 27: And you will also testify because you have been with Me from the beginning.

Verse 26 study: Jesus will always give hope. Even when it doesn’t look that way. The Holy Spirit is there to provide strength and to endure unreasonable hatred and evil in the world. The Holy Spirit helps with hostility as well as this helps people facing persecution. Jesus used two names. In previous blogs, I shared it, and it is worth sharing again, or at least mentioning it if I haven’t. Helper and the Spirit of Truth. Helper conveys helping, encouraging, and strengthening. Spirit of Truth points to teaching, illuminating, and reminding the work of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit ministers to the head and the heart.

Father, thank you for the Helper and the Holy Spirit. It is teachings like these that are the reason why we can understand you better. Bless everyone reading this blog as you continue to educate all of us through the keyboard of my typing. It is you that is teaching, and I won’t take credit for it. I thank you for giving me a platform to share the word. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Author: Darren Watts

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
