8-11 “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their primary sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.
12-15 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but he will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’
-John 16:8-15 The Message
Verse 8: “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.
Verse 9: concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.
Verse 9 study: Jesus seems like he is saying it is a sin to not believe in Me. He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment concerning sin because they do not believe in Me.
Verse 10: and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
Verse 11: and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
Verse 10-11 studies: Christ’s death on the cross is the reason why we can have a personal relationship with God. When we confess our sins, God declares us righteous and delivers us from judgment from our sins.
Verses 8-11 studies: Here are the three essential tasks of the Holy Spirit.
- Convicting the world of its sins, calling to repentance.
- Revealing God’s standard of righteousness to anyone who believes. Christ is no longer physically present on earth.
- Showing Christ’s judgment over Satan.
Verse 12: I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
Verse 13: But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
Verse 14: He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and disclose it to you.
Verse 15: All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”
Verse 13 study: The Holy Spirit guides us to the truth about Christ. The Spirit helps with patience teaching us right from wrong. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will tell them what is to come, the opposition they will face, and the outcome of their efforts. They didn’t understand the promises. It wasn’t until the Holy Spirit came after Jesus’ death and his resurrection. It revealed the truth to the disciples that were written down in books that are now the New Testament.
Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit, we will be lost. I pray we can continue to let the Spirit in to guide our every step. I pray that we will continue to believe in you and not give a second thought to your ministry. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
