13-19 Now I’m returning to you.
I’m saying these things in the world’s hearing
So my people can experience
My joy was completed in them.
I gave them your Word;
The godless world hated them because of it,
Because they didn’t join the world’s ways,
Just as I didn’t enter the world’s methods.
I’m not asking that you take them out of the world
But that you guard them against the Evil One.
They are no more defined by the world
Then, I am represented by the world.
Make them holy—consecrated—with the truth;
Your Word is consecrating truth.
In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world,
I provide them with a task in the world.
I’m consecrating myself for their sakes.
So they’ll be truth-consecrated in their mission.
-John 17:13-19 The Message
Verse 13: “But now I come to You; these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made complete in themselves.
Verse 13 study: Joy is talked about a lot in Christ’s teachings. Joyful is what he wants (15:11; 16:24, 33). Joy is living in intimate contact with Christ. It is the primary source of pleasure. God’s special care and protection are what you will experience. When you keep a personal connection, and it will bring victory when defeat seems impossible.
Verse 14: I have given them Your Word; the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Verse 14 study: The world has different values from Christian values. Christ’s followers don’t follow the world’s sin. Christ-followers don’t follow Satan the way the world does. The enemy is Satan which is Satan’s enemy as well.
Verse 15: I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
Verse 16: They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Verse 17: Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth.
Verse 17 study: Followers of Christ are sanctified (set apart for sacred use, cleansed, and made Holy) by believing and obeying the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). People accepted forgiveness through Christ’s death (Hebrews 7:26-27). When we apply the Word to our hearts and minds, it has its way of purifying us. The bible shows us sins, motivates us to confess, renews our relationship with Christ, and guides us back to the right path.
Verse 18: As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
Verse 19: For their sakes, I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Verse 18 study: Jesus asked for God to keep believers and not to take them out. Use them in the way God can use them. Jesus sent us here, and instead of leaving, we shouldn’t avoid relationships with non-believers. Matthew 5:13-16 reminds us to be the salt and light, and we are to do the work God sent us to do.
Father, we are placed here for a purpose. We don’t need to leave to do the work you ask us to do. Continue to speak to our hearts and minds to know the direction you want us to take. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
