62-64 After sundown, the high priests and Pharisees arranged a meeting with Pilate. They said, “Sir, we just remembered that that liar announced while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will be raised.’ We’ve got to get that tomb sealed until the third day. There’s a good chance his disciples will come and steal the corpse and then go around saying, ‘He’s risen from the dead.’ Then we’ll be worse off than before, the final deceit surpassing the first.”
65-66 Pilate told them, “You will have a guard. Go ahead and secure it the best you can.” So they went out and secured the tomb, sealing the stone and posting guards.
-Matthew 27:62-66 The Message
Verse 62: Now on the next day, that is, the day which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,
Verse 63: and they said, “Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said, ‘After three days I am rising.’
Verse 64: Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
Verse 64 study: The religious leaders took Jesus’ resurrection claims more seriously than the disciples. The disciples didn’t remember Jesus’ teaching on his resurrection (20:17-19). However, the religious leaders did remember his teaching. Jesus’ claims were enough to be afraid of Jesus after his death as when he was alive.
Verse 65: Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”
Verse 66: And they went and made the tomb secure with the guard, sealing the stone.
Verse 66 study: Most people didn’t understand was what Jesus was teaching was real. The Pharisees were afraid of Jesus’ predictions about the resurrection. They took so many precautions to make sure Jesus stayed sealed and guarded. There was only one entrance in and out of the tomb. Remember, the tomb was man-made out of limestone. The tomb was sealed with a string cord across the stone rolled over by the entrance, and it was sealed at each end with clay. The religious leaders took precautious of their own by requesting guards to be at the entrance. With all these precautions, the only way the tomb can be empty is for Jesus to rise from the dead. This is the reason why no one listened or believed. The Pharisees failed to understand that no rock, seal, guard, or army could prevent the Son of God from rising again.
Sticking to the plan is essential in the eyes of God. When we decided on our plans and not you, it did not work out. There is a reason why Jesus listened to you. He knew that no one could stop him from rising because you were at work. Father, let us remember that as we live our daily lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
