6-10 It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for. There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome. As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner, Pilate anticipated them: “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.

-Mark 15:6-10 The Message

Verse 6: Now, at the Passover Feast, he released anyone prisoner they requested for them.

Verse 7: The one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt.

Verse 7 study: Barabbas was arrested for rebelling against the Roman government. He committed murder he was declared a hero among the Jews. The Jews hated being ruled by Romans. They also did not like paying taxes to support the government and their gods. Any of the Roman authorities who had to settle Jewish disputes hated the Jews in return. Rebellion happened more than anyone thinks.

Verse 8: And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

Verse 8 study: This crowd was loyal to the Jewish leaders. The question is, where are the disciples and the crowd that shouted earlier “Hosanna in the highest” (11:10)? Jesus’ sympathizers were afraid of the Jewish leaders, so they stayed in hiding. Or, the multitude included many people in the Palm Sunday parade that turned against Jesus saw they wouldn’t be an earthy conquerors and deliver from Rome.

Verse 9: Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”

Verse 10: For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

Verse 10 study: It’s a known fact that the Jews hated Pilate, but they had to go to Pilate to condemn Jesus for crucifixion. Pilate saw and knew Jesus was being framed. Think about it; why would those that hate Pilate bring charges to him of treason to give the death penalty to one of their fellow Jew?

Many people follow the wrong leaders. These leaders have the wrong approach and motive. Let us be in the right mindset to follow the right leaders and be a leader ourselves. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
