To Drink from the Cup
17-19 Jesus, now well on the way up to Jerusalem, took the Twelve off to the side of the road and said, “Listen to me carefully. We are on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death. They will then hand him over to the Romans for mockery and torture and crucifixion. On the third day he will be raised up alive.”
-Matthew 20:17-19 The Message
Death, Resurrection Foretold
Verse 17: As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the road He said to them
Verse 18: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death,
Verse 19: and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.”
Verses 17-19 studies: Jesus predicted his death for the third time.
The First Time
Matthew 16:21: Jesus Foretells His Death
From that time Jesus began to point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day.
The Second Time
22 And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men; 23 and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.
The Third Time
Death, Resurrection Foretold
17 As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the road He said to them,18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.”
But the disciples did not understand what he meant. Time after time they didn’t understand the message. *Instead, they continued to quibble over their positions in Christ’s kingdom.
*We will learn more about the bickering the disciples was doing on Wednesday’s blog.
