The Royal Welcome

21 1-3 When they neared Jerusalem, having arrived at Bethphage on Mount Olives, Jesus sent two disciples with these instructions: “Go over to the village across from you. You’ll find a donkey tethered there, her colt with her. Untie her and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you’re doing, say, ‘The Master needs them!’ He will send them with you.”
4-5 This is the full story of what was sketched earlier by the prophet:
Tell Zion’s daughter,
“Look, your king’s on his way,
poised and ready, mounted
On a donkey, on a colt,
foal of a pack animal.”
-Matthew 21:1-5 The Message
The Triumphal Entry
21 Verse 1: When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples,
Verse 2: saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with it. Untie them and bring them to Me.
Verse 3: And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them on immediately.”
Verse 4: Now this took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:
Verse 5: “Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold your King is coming to you,
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
Verses 2-5 studies: Matthew mentions a donkey and a colt, while the other gospels mention only the colt. This is the same event, but the idea is here is to focus on the prophecy which Matthew did in Zechariah 9:9.
Zechariah 9:9: Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
He is righteous and endowed with salvation,
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
The verse mentions there is a colt and a donkey. He shows how Jesus’ actions fulfilled the prophet’s words, indicating that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. Jesus did enter Jerusalem on a donkey’s colt which showed he affirmed his Messianic royalty as well as his humility.
