The Story of Two Sons

28 “Tell me what you think of this story: A man had two sons. He went up to the first and said, ‘Son, go out for the day and work in the vineyard.’

29 “The son answered, ‘I don’t want to.’ Later on, he thought better of it and went.

30 “The father gave the same command to the second son. He answered, ‘Sure, glad to.’ But he never went.

31-32 “Which of the two sons did what the father asked?”

They said, “The first.”

Jesus said, “Yes, and I tell you that crooks and whores are going to precede you into God’s kingdom. John came to you showing you the right road. You turned up your noses at him, but the crooks and whores believed him. Even when you saw their changed lives, you didn’t care enough to change and believe him.

Parable of Two Sons

Verse 28: “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go work today in the vineyard.’

Verse 29: But he replied, ‘I do not want to.’ Yet afterward he regretted it and went.

Verse 30: And the man came to his second son and said the same thing; and he replied, ‘I will, sir’; and yet he did not go.

Verse 30 study: The son who said he would obey, didn’t represent the nation of Israel in Jesus’ day. They said they wanted to do right by God’s will, but they kept disobeying. They were phony, going through motions. It is dangerous to pretend to obey God when our hearts are far from him because God knows our true intentions. Our actions should back up our words.

Verse 31: Which of the two did the will of his father?” They *said, “The first.” Jesus *said to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.

Verse 32: For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even have second thoughts afterward so as to believe him.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
