David’s Son and Master

Sincerity Having Peace Instagram Post. 03/17/2022 8:00am

41-42 As the Pharisees were regrouping, Jesus caught them off balance with his own test question: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said, “David’s son.”

43-45 Jesus replied, “Well, if the Christ is David’s son, how do you explain that David, under inspiration, named Christ his ‘Master’?

God said to my Master,

“Sit here at my right hand

until I make your enemies your footstool.”

“Now if David calls him ‘Master,’ how can he at the same time be his son?”

46 That stumped them, literalists that they were. Unwilling to risk losing face again in one of these public verbal exchanges, they quit asking questions for good.

-Matthew 22:41-46 The Message

Verse 41: Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question:

Verse 42: “What do you think about Christ? Whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “The son of David.”

Verse 43: He *said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,

Verse 44: ‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at My right hand,

Until I put Your enemies under Your feet”’?

Verse 45: Therefore, if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?”

Verses 41-45 studies: The Pharisees, Herodians, and Sadducees asked their questions. Jesus asked a question in return. He asked who they thought was Christ, the Messiah was. There was one group that would know that the Messiah would be the descendant of David, the Pharisees. but they never understood that it would be god himself. Jesus quoted Psalm 110:1 to show that the Messiah would be greater than David.

Psalm 110:1: The Lord Gives Dominion to the King.

A Psalm of David.

The Lord says to my Lord:

“Sit at My right hand

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

Hebrews 1:13 uses the same text as proof of Christ’s deity.

Hebrews 1:13: But to which of the angels has He ever said,

“Sit at My right hand,

Until I make Your enemies

A footstool for Your feet”?

The most important question is what we believe about Christ? Other theological questions are irrelevant until we believe that Jesus is who he is.

Verse 46: No one was able to offer Him a word in answer, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him any more questions.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
