41-43 “Then he will turn to the ‘goats,’ the ones on his left, and say, ‘Get out, worthless goats! You’re good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because—

I was hungry and you gave me no meal,

I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

I was homeless and you gave me no bed,

I was shivering and you gave me no clothes,

Sick and in prison, and you never visited.’

44 “Then those ‘goats’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn’t help?’

45 “He will answer them, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.’

46 “Then those ‘goats’ will be herded to their eternal doom, but the ‘sheep’ to their eternal reward.”

-Matthew 25:41-46 The Message

Verse 41: “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Verse 42: For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink,

Verse 43: I was a stranger, and you did not welcome me, naked, and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.’

Verse 44: Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’

Verse 45: Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’

Verse 46: And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Verse 46 study: The eternal punishment happens in hell. This is the place for punishment after death for all who refuse to report. There are three words used to connect with eternal punishment in the Bible.

  1. Sheol or “the grave.” It is in the Old Testament; its meaning is the place of the dead under the earth.
  2. Hades is the Greek word for the underworld, the realm of the dead. It is a word used in the New Testament for Sheol.
  3. Gehenna, or hell, was named after the valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem, where children were sacrificed by fire to the pagan gods. It is a place of eternal fire prepared for the devil, his angels, and those who do not believe in God. After the resurrection and the last judgment, this is the final and eternal state of wickedness.
Sheol or "the grave."

Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters;
so does Sheol those who have sinned.

-Job 24:19 ESV

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.

-Psalm 16:10 ESV

I said, In the middle of my days
    I must depart;
I am consigned to the gates of Sheol
for the rest of my years.

-Isaiah 38:10 ESV

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

-Matthew 16:18 ESV

and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

-Revelation 1:18 ESV

13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

-Revelation 20:13-14 ESV

Gehenna, or hell

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to Molech.

-2 Kings 23:10 ESV

and he made offerings in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom and burned his sons as an offering, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel.

-2 Chronicles 28:3 ESV

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

-Matthew 5:22 ESV

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

-Matthew 10:28 ESV

And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

-Mark 9:43 ESV

But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

-Luke 12:5 ESV

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

-James 3:6 ESV

And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.

-Revelation 19:20 ESV

And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

-Matthew 25:46 ESV

9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

-Revelation 20:9-10 ESV

When Jesus warns against unbelief, he is trying to save us from severe punishment.

Author: Darren Watts

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
