63 Jesus kept silent.
Then the Chief Priest said, “I command you by the authority of the living God to say if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
64 Jesus was curt: “You yourself said it. And that’s not all. Soon you’ll see it for yourself:
The Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Mighty One,
Arriving on the clouds of heaven.”
65-66 At that, the Chief Priest lost his temper, ripping his robes, yelling, “He blasphemed! Why do we need witnesses to accuse him? You all heard him blaspheme! Are you going to stand for such blasphemy?”
They all said, “Death! That seals his death sentence.”
67-68 Then they were spitting in his face and knocking him around. They jeered as they slapped him: “Prophesy, Messiah: Who hit you that time?”
-Matthew 26:63-68 The Message
Verse 63: But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
Verse 64: Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Verse 64 study: Jesus declared his royalty in no uncertain terms. Jesus claimed to be the Messiah, as his listeners know this. He knew this declaration would be his undoing, but he didn’t panic. Instead, he was calm, courageous, and determined.
Verse 65: Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.
Verse 66: What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”
Verse 65-66 studies: The high priest accused Jesus of blasphemy, calling himself God. To the Jews, this was a crime punishable by death. The religious leaders refused to consider that Jesus’ words might be true. They went against Jesus; in doing so, they sealed their own fate and his. Like the members of the Council, you must decide whether Jesus’ words are blasphemy or truth. Your decision has eternal implications.
Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death. -Leviticus 24:16 ESV
Verse 67: Then they spat in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,
Verse 68: saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
