The Tomb

57-61 Late in the afternoon, a wealthy man from Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus, arrived. His name was Joseph. He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate granted his request. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in clean linens, put it in his own tomb, a new tomb only recently cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the entrance. Then he went off. But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary stayed, sitting in plain view of the tomb.

-Matthew 27:57-61 The Message

Jesus Is Buried

Verse 57: When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

Verse 58: He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.

Verses 57-58 studies: Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple of Jesus. He was a religious leader and an honored member of the Council. Joseph was afraid to speak against religious leaders who oppressed Jesus, but now he is courageous and bold for asking to take Jesus’ body from the cross and bury it. All the disciples that followed Jesus fled, but the Jewish leader Joseph followed Jesus secretly to do what was right.

43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

-Mark 15:43 ESV

Verse 59: And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud

Verse 60: and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

Verse 60 study: The tomb they laid Jesus was probably a man-made cave cut out of one of the many limestone hills in the area. These were caves that were large enough to walk in.

Verse 61: Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
