Risen from the Dead

28 1-4 After the Sabbath, as the first light of the new week dawned, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to keep vigil at the tomb. Suddenly the earth reeled and rocked under their feet as God’s angel came down from heaven, came right up to where they were standing. He rolled back the stone and then sat on it. Shafts of lightning blazed from him. His garments shimmered snow-white. The guards at the tomb were scared to death. They were so frightened; they couldn’t move.

5-6 The angel spoke to the women: “There is nothing to fear here. I know you’re looking for Jesus, the One they nailed to the cross. He is not here. He was raised, just as he said. Come and look at the place where he was placed.

7 “Now, get on your way quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He is risen from the dead. He is going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there.’ That’s the message.”

-Matthew 28:1-7 The Message

The Resurrection

28 Verse 1: Now, after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

Verse 1 study: The other Mary was not Jesus’ mother. She could have been the wife of Clopas. (John 19:25) Or, if she was the mother of James and John (Matthew 27:56) she may have been Jesus’ aunt.

Verse 2: And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Verse 2 study: The stone wasn’t rolled away so Jesus could get out; it was for others to see that Jesus rose from the dead as he promised.

Verse 3: His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.

Verse 4: And for fear of him, the guards trembled and became like dead men.

Verse 5: But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

Verse 6: He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

Verse 6 study: Jesus’ resurrection is the key to Christian faith. Here is why.

  1. He promised he would rise, and he did. That should bring confidence he will achieve what he promised.
  2. Jesus’ bodily resurrection shows the living ruler is Christ and the eternal kingdom of God. He is not an imposter or false prophet.
  3. We can be sure of our resurrection because he was resurrected. Death is not the end; it’s the future.
  4. The power that brought Jesus back to life is available to bring our spiritually dead selves back to life.
  5. The resurrection is the basis for the church’s witness to the world. Jesus is more than a human leader; he is the Son of God.

Verse 7: Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

Verses 5-7 studies: The angel gave the women four messages:

  1. Don’t be afraid. Resurrections bring joy, not fear. Remember this and the empty tomb when you are worried.
  2. He is not here. Jesus is not dead and should not be looked at as the dead. He is alive with his people.
  3. Come, see. The women can check the evidence themselves. The tomb was empty then and still is today. So the resurrection is a historical fact.
  4. Go quietly and tell. The women were to spread the joy of the resurrection. We, too, are to do the same.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
