Learn It by Heart

20-22 Dear friend, listen well to my words;

    tune your ears to my voice.

Keep my message in plain view at all times.

    Concentrate! Learn it by heart!

Those who discover these words live, really live;

    body and soul, they’re bursting with health.

23-27 Keep vigilant watch over your heart;

    that’s where life starts.

Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth;

    avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.

Keep your eyes straight ahead;

    ignore all sideshow distractions.

Watch your step,

    and the road will stretch out smooth before you.

Look neither right nor left;

    leave evil in the dust.

-Proverbs 4:20-27 The Message

20 My son, be attentive to my words;

    incline your ear to my sayings.

21 Let them not escape from your sight;

    keep them within your heart.

22 For they are life to those who find them,

    and healing to all their flesh.

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,

    for from it flow the springs of life.

24 Put away from you crooked speech,

    and put devious talk far from you.

25 Let your eyes look directly forward,

    and your gaze be straight before you.

26 Ponder the path of your feet;

    then all your ways will be sure.

27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;

    turn your foot away from evil.

Verses 13-17 studies: Friends and family can make you fall. The concept of failing is difficult for people to accept, but yes, friends and family can lure you into doing wrong. For example, young people want to be accepted. So what happens is that they won’t criticize or confront another friend for either wrong plans or actions. Other people can’t see how their actions can lead to trouble. We should be acceptable to others but understand that we need some healthy skepticism about human behavior. When you feel heavily influenced, think before acting. Don’t let your friends cause you to fail.

Verses 20-27 studies: Our heart and feelings of love and desire show us to what extent we always find time to do what we enjoy. Solomon tells us to guard our hearts above everything to make sure we concentrate on those desires and goals that will keep us on track. Your affections should push you in the right direction. Keep your boundaries, keep your eyes on your goal, and don’t get sidetracked by those situations that lead you to sin.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
