Buy Wisdom, Education, Insight

16

22-25 Listen concerning the father who raised you; when your mother grows old, don’t neglect her.

Buy truth—don’t sell it for love or money;

    buy wisdom, buy education, buy insight.

Parents rejoice when their children turn out well;

    wise children become proud parents.

So make your father happy!

    Make your mother proud!

17

26 Dear child, I want your full attention;

    please do what I show you.

27-28 A prostitute is a bottomless pit;

    a loose woman can get you in deep trouble fast.

She’ll take you for all you’ve got;

    she’s worse than a pack of thieves.

-Proverbs 23:22-28 The Message

22 Listen to your father who gave you life

    and does not despise your mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it;

    buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;

    he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

25 Let your father and mother be glad;

    let her who bore you rejoice.

26 My son, give me your heart

    and let your eyes observe my ways.

27 For a prostitute is a bottomless pit;

    an adulteress is a narrow well.

28 She lies in wait like a robber

    and increases the traitors among mankind.

-Proverbs 23:22-28 ESV

Verses 22-25 studies: The fifth commandment is teaching children the right family relationships.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. -Exodus 20:12 ESV

This is a testament to the sages’ discerning observation of harmonious and joyful human relationships.

Verses 26-28 studies: This verse warns against immoral women.

Verse 26 study: Pay attention, give me your heart. Teachers of wisdom call for undivided attention and trust in their teaching.

Verse 27 study: This is an image of a pit used for trapping wild animals.

Adultress, “a foreign woman,” is a term used for an immoral or adulterous person.

A narrow well is impossible to escape from.

6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud. -Jeremiah 38:6 ESV

Verse 28 study: Traitors or treacherous is signifying unfaithfulness in marriage.

My name is Darren. I started sharing devotions in June 2019. As one of the ministry leaders at my church. One reason why I started devotions is because of the lack of inspiration and motivation in our lives. It is hard to be encouraged with a lot of negativity going around. I invite you to be encouraged by the word of God. Our struggles can be personal, at the workplace, and the lack of community in our lives. When we go through hard times, we need the word of God. Please read them and be encouraged. I also started a podcast talking about racism and discrimination. Please take a moment to check that out as well. Afternoon Coffee Break with Darren Watts.
