17-20 When Jesus finally got there, he found Lazarus already four days dead. Bethany was near Jerusalem, only a couple of miles away, and many of the Jews were visiting Martha and Mary, sympathizing with them over their brother. Martha heard Jesus was coming and went out to meet him. Mary remained in the house.
21-22 Martha said, “Master, if you’d been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Even now, I know that whatever you ask God he will give you.”
23 Jesus said, “Your brother will be raised up.”
24 Martha replied, “I know that he will be raised up in the resurrection at the end of time.”
25-26 “You don’t have to wait for the End. I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this?”
-John 11:17-26 The Message.
Jesus is comforting Mary and Martha after Lazarus’ death. Let’s continue into the story.
Verse 17: So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
Verse 18: Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;
Verse 19: Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
Verse 20: Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.
Verse 21: Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
Verse 22: “Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
Verse 23: Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Verse 24: Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
Verse 25: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies.
Verse 26: And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Verse 27: She said to Him, “Yes, Lord: I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”
Verses 25-26 study: Jesus is the Creator (John 14:6), and as the Creator, what makes you believe that he can’t do anything beyond miracles? We have read miracles performed by Jesus. He can restore life in anyone. Those who believe in Christ will have a spiritual life that death can’t conquer or diminish. Realizing his power, we will see how incredible his offer is to us and how we can contribute our services to him! Think of this; because I live, you will live also.
Verses 27 studies: We all have moments where we are too busy to sit down in quietness and meditate on the word of God. We struggle with it because of the busyness of work and personal life. Martha is the same way. She was always too busy to sit down and talk with Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). We see here that she is a woman of deep faith and that her statement of faith is precisely the response that Jesus would love to hear from us!
Father, thank you for our study. There is nothing like sitting down to read your word and going into detail about your word. I pray for good health to continue sharing the word, letting your words spill into me to share with others. I don’t take credit for the work of creating a blog and starting a following of other believers to read and study as well. This is all your work, and I give you praise for it. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
