10-11 He then called the crowd together and said, “Listen, and take this to heart. It’s not what you swallow that pollutes your life, but what you vomit up.”

12 Later his disciples came and told him, “Did you know how upset the Pharisees were when they heard what you said?”

13-14 Jesus shrugged it off. “Every tree that wasn’t planted by my Father in heaven will be pulled up by its roots. Forget them. They are blind men leading blind men. When a blind man leads a blind man, they both end up in the ditch.”

15 Peter said, “I don’t get it. Put it in plain language.”

16-20 Jesus replied, “You, too? Are you being willfully stupid? Don’t you know that anything that is swallowed works its way through the intestines and is finally defecated? But what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and cussing. That’s what pollutes. Eating or not eating certain foods, washing or not washing your hands—that’s neither here nor there.”

-Matthew 15:10-20 The Message

Verse 10: After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand!

Verse 11: It is not what enters the mouth that defiles the person, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles the person.”

Verse 11 study: Jesus is referring to Jewish regulations concerning food and drink. This verse can be paraphrased, “You aren’t made unclean by eating nonkosher food! It is what you think and says that makes you unclean!” The Pharisees took offense to this statement because it concerned them about what people ate and drink and may have a reflection on their attitude.

Verse 12: Then the disciples came and *said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”

Verse 13: But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

Verse 14: Leave them alone; they are blind guides of blind people. And if a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Verses 13-14 studies: Jesus told his disciples to leave the Pharisees alone because they are blind to God’s truth. Anyone who listened to the Pharisees’ teaching risked spiritual blindness. Not all religious leaders clearly see God’s truth. Make sure you listen and learn from those who have good spiritual eyesight in scripture; they teach and follow the principles of Scripture.

The Heart of Man

Verse 15: Peter said to Him, “Explain the parable to us.”

Verse 15 study: Later on, Peter would face an issue of clean and unclean food. Then he would learn that nothing should be a barrier to proclaiming the gospel to the Gentiles (non-Jews).

Verse 16: Jesus said, “Are you also still lacking in understanding?

Verse 17: Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?

Verse 18: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person.

Verse 19: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and slanderous statements.

Verse 20: These are the things that defile the person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

Verses 16-20 studies: We work hard to keep our appearance attractive. What is in our hearts is more essential. The way we are deep down inside is what matters to God. What’s on the inside, no one can see. So, what are you like inside? He will continue the process of change inside them when people become Christians, God makes them different on the inside. But that is if they ask. God wants us to seek healthy thoughts and motives, not just healthy food and exercise.
