16 1-4 “I’ve told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor. They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes, and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them.

The Friend Will Come

4-7 “I didn’t tell you this earlier because I was with you every day. But now I am on my way to the One who sent me. Not one of you has asked, ‘Where are you going?’ Instead, the longer I’ve talked, the sadder you’ve become. So let me repeat this truth: It’s better for you that I leave. If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come. But if I go, I’ll send him to you.

-John 16:1-7 The Message

Verse 1: “These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.

Verse 2: They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think he is offering service to God.

Verse 2 study: Before Saul became Paul, he looked for people to persecute as Christians. He was convinced he was doing the right thing (Acts 9:1-2, 26:9-11).

Verse 3: These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.

Verse 4:  But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning because I was with you.

Jesus Teaches about the Holy Spirit

Verse 5: But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

Verse 5 study: The disciples never wondered about Jesus’ death. They asked about his death but never dug deeper to wonder about his death. They were only concerned about themselves. Did they ever think of what would become of them if Jesus went away?

Verse 6: But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

Verse 7: But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Verse 7 study: Put this verse into reality. What if Jesus didn’t have a reason to come? No gospel. If he didn’t die, no sins were removed, and he can’t rise against death to defeat it. If he didn’t go back to the Father, no Holy Spirit. Christ’s presence was limited one place at a time. His leaving meant he could be present to the whole world through the Holy Spirit.

Father, thank you for today and every day. I pray today for your goodness and mercy. Thank you for allowing us to live freely to share the gospel. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
