Jesus Comforts His Disciples

(14) 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Therefore, how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

-John 14:1-10 The Message

Verse 1: “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, also believe in Me.

Verse 2: In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

Verse 3: If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may also be.

Verse 4: And you know the way where I am going.”

Verses 1-3 studies: Jesus’ words show us the way to eternal life. It is as secure as it can be. The only issue maybe is your willingness not to believe.

Verses 2-3 studies: We know that we have eternal life with Jesus when we believe in him. There are a ton of promises, and although we don’t know what eternal life looks like, that’s the planning Jesus is doing for us, so we don’t have to fear.

Verse 5: Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”

Verse 6: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Verse 7: If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on, you know Him and have seen Him.”

Verse 8: Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

Verse 9: Jesus said to him, “have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Verse 10: Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.

Verses 5-6 studies: It is the most important verse, as introductory as this verse is. The only way to God is through Jesus. As he is man and God. Because we unite with Jesus, we also connect with God. Therefore, continue to trust Jesus to take you to the Father.

Verse 6 studies: This Bible verse may sound limiting, but it is not. It is not narrow. Instead, it is so broad that anyone can see it and fit through it if you let yourself see it. You don’t have to argue if you let yourself understand the only way to God is through Jesus. Thank God for providing a way to get to him. The way to Jesus is our path to the Father. As the truth, he’s the reality of God’s promises. As life, he is divine life now and eternally.

Verse 9 study: Jesus is a visible, tangible image of someone we can’t see as God. He is the revolution as Jesus explained to Philip that if anyone that wants to see the Father will have to know Jesus to know God. The search for God for the truth and reality and Christ (Colossians 1:15, Hebrews 1:1-4).

Father, let us continue to plan our Eternal Life by following you and knowing you more. We know you are doing one side, but we have our side we have to do for all of this to work. Thank you for your instruction and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
