6-12 I spelled out your character in detail
To the men and women, you gave me.
They were yours in the first place;
Then you gave them to me,
And they have now done what you said.
They know now, beyond the shadow of a doubt,
That everything you gave me is firsthand from you,
For the message you gave me, I gave them;
And they took it and were convinced
That I came from you.
They believed that you sent me.
I pray for them.
I’m not praying for the God-rejecting world
But for those you gave me,
For they are yours by right.
Everything mine is yours, and yours mine,
And my life is on display in them.
For I’m no longer going to be visible in the world;
They’ll continue in the world
While I return to you.
Holy Father, guard them as they pursue this life
That you conferred as a gift through me,
So they can be one heart and mind
As we are one heart and mind.
As long as I was with them, I guarded them
In the pursuit of the life you gave through me;
I even posted a lookout.
And not one of them got away,
Except for the rebel bent on destruction
(the exception that proved the rule of Scripture).
-John 17:6-12 The Message
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
Verse 6: “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
Verse 7: “Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believe that You sent Me.
Verse 8: for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.
Verse 9: I asked on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours.
Verse 10: All things that are Mine and Yours and Yours are Mine; I have been glorified in them.
Verse 10 study: Question; I have been glorified in them.” What does this mean? Jesus’ disciples show his character and how he is presented to the world through them. God’s glory is the revelation of his character and presence. Does your life show and present Jesus? Are you letting Jesus’ good side out when you are sharing with others about Jesus? Do people want to know Jesus more because of your actions?
Verse 11: I am no longer in the world; and yet they are in the world, and I come to You, Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.
Verse 11 study: Be united in love and harmony as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united. This is what Jesus asked of his disciples. This is the most potent form of all unions. We will study more of this on Sunday. If you wish to get a head start, it’s in chapter 17:21-23.
Verse 12: While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
Verse 12 study: The son perdition is Judas. He was lost because he betrayed Jesus (Psalm 41:9). Perdition in Christian theology is a state of eternal punishment and damnation into which a sinful and unpenitent person passes after death.
Father, Jesus’ prayer for his disciples, is what they needed to be successful. As we continue into the prayer tomorrow, let us learn from Jesus’ prayer to be better and faithful. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
