If You Love Learning
12 If you love learning, you love the discipline that goes with it—
how shortsighted to refuse correction!
2 A good person basks in the delight of God,
and he wants nothing to do with devious schemers.
3 You can’t find firm footing in a swamp,
but life rooted in God stands firm.
4 A hearty wife invigorates her husband,
but a frigid woman is cancer in the bones.
5 The thinking of principled people makes for justice;
the plots of degenerates corrupt.
-Proverbs 12:1-5 The Message
12 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates reproof is stupid.
2 A good man obtains favor from the Lord,
but a man of evil devices he condemns.
3 No one is established by wickedness,
but the root of the righteous will never be moved.
4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,
but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are just;
the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
Verse 1 study: Schooling can teach you very little. If you don’t want to learn, continue to be foolish. If you want to be taught, you can learn an unlimited amount of things. For example, accepting discipline, correction, and learning from the wisdom of others. A person that doesn’t want to accept constructive criticism has a big problem with pride. That type of person is unlikely to learn anything.
Verse 3 study: Established means to be successful. Real success comes from those who do right. Their efforts stand the test of time. What kind of success does the wicked bring? They cheated to pass a course or get a larger tax fund; is this not a success? How about a person who ignores their family commitments and mistreats his workers but gets ahead in business. These are only temporary successes. They were brought out as expense in character. Cheaters become liars and go beyond to hurt others and be callous and cruel. Evil will not lead to success; it leads to more evil. Real success will maintain personal integrity. If you are not a success by God’s standards, you have not achieved true success.
