15 “Are you listening to me? Really listening?

16-19 “How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, ‘We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.’ John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a boozer, a friend of the misfits. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

-Matthew 11:15-19 The Message

Verse 15: The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Verse 16: “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children,

Verse 17: and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not mourn.’

Verse 18: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’

Verse 19: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

Verses 16-19 studies: Jesus condemned the attitude of his generation, and it didn’t matter what he said or did; they took the opposite view. They were cynical and skeptical because he challenged them based on their comfortable, secure, and self-centered lives. So often, we will change or make minor adjustments to justify our inconsistencies because it requires us to change the way we live.

Father, let us pay attention! Sometimes, there are answers that we don’t see. It’s not because we aren’t looking; we are not paying attention to other sources, like hearing and digging a little deeper. So let us focus on paying attention to things we usually don’t pay attention to. A lot of us may have answers when that happens. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
