Prayer for Himself

Thursday, September 9, 2021

17 1-5 Jesus said these things. Then, raising his eyes in prayer, he said:

Father, it’s time.

Display the bright splendor of your Son

So the Son, in turn, may show your bright brilliance.

You put him in charge of everything human.

So he might give real and eternal life to all in his care.

And this is the real and eternal life:

That they know you,

The one and only true God,

And Jesus Christ, whom you sent.

I glorified you on earth

By completing down to the last detail

What you assigned me to do.

And now, Father, glorify me with your very own splendor,

The very phenomenon I had in your presence

Before, there was a world.

-John 17:1-5 The Message

Jesus Prays for Himself

Verse 1: Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

Verse 2: even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

Verse 1 study: In this entire chapter, we will read Jesus’ prayer. He prayed for himself, his disciples, and future followers (us)! As we read his prayer, it may be similar to how and what we pray for. Satan taking over those under God’s authority and how those that are at war against each other. Two forces Satan’s vs. Jesus’ being at each other with hatred. So Jesus prayed for his disciples, including us, future followers. He prayed that we are safe from Satan’s power, to set us apart, making us pure and holy, uniting through his truth.

Verse 3: This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Verse 3 study: Can we pay close attention to this verse? This verse clearly states that eternal life is through God; Jesus Christ was sent by God. It requires personal attention, a relationship with God in Jesus Christ. This is as clear as it can get. But, let’s understand, it has nothing to do with the domination of churches. You don’t have to be a Church of Christ to have eternal life, nor a Wesleyan, Apostolic, Methodist, Baptist, or any of these. All you need is to believe, know God. Reread it, verse 3: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” Don’t let anyone else convince you differently. Make sure we admit our sins and then turn away from them because Christ’s love lives in us by the Holy Spirit.

Verse 4: I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which you have given Me to do.

Verse 5: Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory I had with You before the world was.

Verse 5 study: Jesus came to earth before, Jesus was the one with God, Jesus asked his Father when his mission is about to complete to restore him to his original place of honor and authority. Jesus’ resurrection, as ascension and Stephen’s dying exclamation (Acts 7:56). It shows that Jesus did return to his exalted position at the right hand of God.

Father, there are times that disagreements turn into arguments. There is not a lot of love left after a conversation of understanding you. Let us be wise and allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts and actions. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
