16 Keep the rules and keep your life;

    careless living kills.

17 Mercy to the needy is a loan to God,

    and God pays back those loans in full.

18 Discipline your children while you still have the chance;

    indulging them destroys them.

19 Let angry people endure the backlash of their own anger;

    if you try to make it better, you’ll only make it worse.

20 Take good counsel and accept correction—

    that’s the way to live wisely and well.

21 We humans keep brainstorming options and plans,

    but God’s purpose prevails.

22 It’s only human to want to make a buck,

    but it’s better to be poor than a liar.

-Proverbs 19:16-22 The Message

16 Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;

    he who despises his ways will die.

17 Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,

    and he will repay him for his deed.

18 Discipline your son, for there is hope;

    do not set your heart on putting him to death.

19 A man of great wrath will pay the penalty,

    for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again.

20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,

    so you may gain wisdom in the future.

21 Many are the plans in a man’s mind, but the purpose of the Lord will stand.

22 What is desired in a man is steadfast love,

    and a poor man is better than a liar.

-Proverbs 19:16-22 ESV

Verse 17 study: The Lord rewards those compassionate to the poor. This verse talks about how God Himself with the plight of the poor. The help they are given becomes God’s own debt to the giver. God identifies with the poor, and Jesus identifies with the poor in Matthew 25:31-46. God, our Creator, values us all, rich or poor. When we help the poor, we honor the Creator and his creation. God accepts us to help as if we offered it directly to him.

The Final Judgment

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” -Matthew 25:31-46 ESV
