Son of Man, Son of God

13 When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some think he is John the Baptizer, some say Elijah, some Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

15 He pressed them, “And how about you? Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

-Matthew 16:13-16 The Message

Peter’s Confession of Christ

Verse 13: Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

Verse 13 study: Caesarea Philippi was located several miles north at the Sea of Galilee, in the territory ruled by Philip. The influence of Greek and Roman culture was everywhere and pagan temples and idols came alive. After Philip became ruler, he rebuilt and renamed the city after the emperor (Caesar) and himself. The city was called Caesarea, the same name as the capital city of Philip’s brother Herod’s territory.

Verse 14: And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.”

Verse 15: He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?”

Verse 16: Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Verses 13-17 studies: The disciples answered Jesus’ question with the common view, that Jesus was one of the great prophets that came back to life. This may have started from Deuteronomy 18:18, where God said he would raise up a prophet from among the people.

Deuteronomy 18:18: I will raise up for them a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them everything that I command him.

Peter confessed Jesus as divine and as promised and long-awaited Messiah. If Jesus were to ask you this question, how would you respond? Is he your Lord and Messiah?
